Arrived at the Falkland Islands harbor which is guarded by a British frigate, a reminder of the short 1982 war when Argentina captured the islands they call the Malvinas and occupied it for about 10 weeks before Britain recaptured it. There is a British military presence including Prince William who is due here next month for 6 weeks, but will not be seen in public according to information given the local population. A key here includes oil reserves said to be larger than all the North Sea oil reserves. Drilling begins in 2016.
Only 3,000 residents here, and many more penguins. We spent our day with the penguins. Drove in a 4X4 vehicle about 90 minutes across the windswept island ... Just 5 of us including a local driver who happened to be the Director of the YMCA. Thousands of penguins. The large ones with the yellow patch are king penguins, the others gentoo penguins.
