Following a Cyclone to Rarotonga, Cook Islands!
A quick post from our new abode - Rarotonga, the Cook Islands, about 600 miles southwest of Tahiti.
The beat goes on. We'll be here about a week. Unfortunately I may have to wait a week or so to find a wireless place so I can post pictures from my computer. Suffice it to say, it is just gorgeous here - a sunlit day with a view from our second floor of the reef and the South Pacific beyond, a smooth sand beach right below us. But wee've been on the go all night and will collapse in front of our wondrous room. Three days prior this place was hit by a cyclone with 200 mph winds. But that was then and this is now.
We dashed here after leaving our atoll - Rangiroa in French Polynesia- for Pepeete, the capitol of Tahiti where we had a considerable layover for our 3:40 a.m. flight (an Air New Zealand plane that hops acxross the islands all the way from LA.) But that turned into a treat. A French couple working for 2 years in Tahiti, whom we met on the atoll on an excursion to an even more remote Blue Lagoon, picked us up in Papeete and took us to their home for dinner, high in the hills overlooking the capitol and seeing sunset over neighboring Moorea. T'was a wonderful spirited two language conversation. You should have seen Janet trying to explain some cursewords in French. All is well. More to come. Anyone able to translate "merde"? We also did poetry and stories to get to the other side of the brow.
